Resupply System Western Front

From base depots, trains were loaded with a variety of loads - standard or bulk.

For rations and other consumables, 'packs' – a standard day's consumption for particular size units – were loaded on a train and sent forward in custody of a conducting officer to the railhead for the heavy rail system.

At the railhead, cargo was transshipped into either light rail or lorries and taken to delivery points where GS wagons took over to deliver to units.

There were many variations of this sequence depending on available means of transport and the condition of rail, roads, tramways and tracks, and enemy interdiction.
