Lieutenant General J.Bevan Edwards KCB KCMG 1835-1922
A graduate of the Royal Military Academy Woolwich, he served in the Crimean War, Indian Mutiny and Mahdist War,
Invited to advise the Australian Colonies on defence in 1889, he recommended combining for mutual defence, uniform organisation and armament, a common Defence Act, a military college to train officers, and uniform gauge for railways.
He was promoted to lieutenant general in 1891, briefly tried a political carreer, then was appointed colonel commandant of the Royal Engineers in 1903.
