SMITH
Victor Gregory
professional soldier and transport manager 1937-2010

Vic Smith was born in Richmond Queensland on 8 June 1937. His early employment in North Queensland involved cane cutting, tin mining and station hand; later in Brisbane he worked at a plumber's assistant.

He joined the Regular Army in Brisbane in August 1958: after recruit training he was allocated to RAASC and sent to the RAASC School at Puckapunyal for a driver course, followed by posting to 1 Coy RAASC Ingleburn. Then he moved to 3 Tpt PI Wacol in 1960 and in 1965 to 101 Tpt PI Brisbane, promoted corporal. His next posting was as sergeant instructor Southern Command Trade Training Centre Broadmeadows..

Returning to Queensland in 1972, he was posted to 109 Tpt Coy Canungra later Canungra Tpt Unit. Next followed HQ 1 Tpt and Mov Gp Brisbane, and in 1977 Brisbane Tpt Unit.

He left the army in August 1978 after 20 years service, health problems denying him overseas service. He started working for Russell's Transport at Eagle Farm, a job he held for 17 years.

Vic married Ronna in 1959: they had four sons: Gregory, Colin (dec), Mark and Noel. He lived at Ningi near Bribie Island in later years, enjoying time away in his caravan and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He passed away on 1st April 2010.
