Allan (Shady) Lane, was born in Townsville and educated in North Queensland.

He enlisted in the Militia in March 1942 and was called up for full time service in April, transferring to the AIF in August. He served with the 51 Inf Bn and later 31/51 Inf Bn in Torres Strait Force, New Guinea and was then wounded whilst fighting on Bougainville. Recovering from his wounds, he was posted to HQ Torres Strait Force, before being discharged from the AIF in June 1946.

Re-enlisting in the Australian Regular Army in 1953, he was allocated to RAASC and posted to 101 Sup Dep Pl in Brisbane.   Following this he had postings to Jungle Training Centre Canungra, 115 Sup Dep Pl Brisbane; HQ PNG Comd Port Moresby;  and 112 Sup Pl Brisbane. In 1973 he was reallocated to RAAOC and posted to Central Army Supply Agency in Melbourne.

He elected discharge from the army in 1976 with the rank of Warrant Officer Class 1, and took up residence in Canungra where he was involved with the management of the Golf Club and RSL, being President of the Canungra Sub Branch 1986-87.

He married Thelma in 1948 and they raised four children: sons Gary, Russell, Trevor and daughter Dianne.  Thelma predeceased him in 1986.  Shady passed away on 16 November 2009 at Beaudesert.
